Good Times

Know what’s fun? Going to the doctor and having them scold you for getting off medication 3 and a half years ago. Then having them refuse to give you any now because, dude, you are crazy. How do you know what you need if you are crazy?

Instead she ordered a blood panel, which is fine since I wanted one anyway. It could be hormonal, this crazy I have. No kidding.

So, how about that. I finally got enough courage to go ask for some meds and I was told no. But I can call a psychiatrist that is covered under my plan and wait for three weeks for a consult. And then maybe I’ll get some. Awesome.

  1. leah please don’t give up or give in!

i know it sucks when you know what you need and someone tells you they need to essentially go by the books and can’t do that for you. been there done that but thankfully only with minor health issues.

still, do what you must do to get healthy again, it really will be worth it even if you have to play by the dumb rules for a little bit.

  2. I’m so proud of you for working up the courage to ask – sometimes that itself seems so difficult to do. Maybe you can ask your doctor for a second opinion? 😉

  3. I am delurking to say that I am cheering you on from the sidelines– it is so hard to face the phone, doctors, etc, etc, when you are in a mental black hole. So when they turn around and give you the “Naw, not at the moment” response, it sure is irritating. Don’t lose courage, and you CAN get through 3 weeks, I am sure of it!

  4. That suks Leah. I’m sorry. How frustrating for you. But I’m proud of you for having the courage to ask. And yes…it might be hormonal..and I’m glad you got the bloodwork done. But I still think the doctor should have listened to you and considered your point of view.

    I’m routing for you!

  5. Having a blood panel is a really good thing. If it is hormonal, of course they’ll take a completely different pharmaceutical route. (Is it e before u after c or the other way around? 😉
    Hang in there.

  6. Wow, Leah. When you hear all the great things the drugs can do for you, they don’t mention how badly things can go with these doctors. I just hope it doesn’t add to things for you now but I think you had some bad luck. I hope it is easier the next time.

The thing about ‘you are crazy so why should I believe you when you say that you are crazy’ is a problem with the mental health profession in that sometimes they pathologize the whole person. They sort of confuse emotion and mood and distress with an inability to accurately represent the world or one’s own situation. I’m rambling but there are two main problems with this–one, that you are so freaking insightful about the world and your situation and two, that some of the most distorted thinkers are often technically sane. I don’t know why this person couldn’t see this and I’m sorry they didn’t–they need some schooling.

  7. I’m sorry, Leah. I just went back on meds, myself, after an unsuccessful try at being prescription free. My doctor is holding my hand with this, and I hate having to line up appointments because a busy calendar itself stresses me out.

However, I’m better and my doctor is a nice guy. I wish the same for you, too.

  8. Couple years ago I had to switch from one scrip to the other because of insurance, and the transition sucked. Took a lousy december and made it worse. But the transition was worth it — turns out the new stuff works better for me AND helps with IBS problems. Totally good.
We’re all with you on this. Do what you have to and we’ll be sending out the good energy to help you through it.
hugs to you and everyone around you.

  9. I think hormones, at least for me play a huge part in my mental maleup or breakup….whichever way you want to see it. Stick with getting what you need.

  10. Delurking to say good luck with everything. Hang in there, I know how tough it can be without what you need. Don’t lose your courage, keep fighting.

  11. Dr.s suck. I hate them. Thank goodness most people realize you have to manage your own health care in spite of them. It might be different if the anti-depressants were fast acting but they usually aren’t and most of “us” put off making the appointment longer than we should to begin with….sorry, ranting here … Anyway, you totally rock Leah and I hate that you’re having a difficult time getting the medical help you WANT. Drives me nuts. Try to stay strong, insistant and positive. Do what you can, when you can and try not to put pressure on yourself to “be” this or that. Doctors. Blech.

  12. Go you!!! for getting the help you need. It is a first step on the road to feeling happy again.

That would have frustrated the hell out of me to have my doc turn a deaf ear. Hang in there!!

  13. Keep on pushing them, Leah. Push, push, push. Apparently, it’s the only way we get ahead and yes, it sucks. I’m kind of from the “fine, I’ll be the bitch you want me to be so I can be a better me” school nowadays.

    Now enrolling.

  14. Kelly (Mocha) is so right. You are your own best advocate. Much love to you. I’ve been there too and it sucks ass, but there is an ‘other side.’ See you there.
